### What is Remote Desktop Services or Terminal Server?
Remote Desktop Services (RDS) or Terminal Server provides remote access to a Microsoft® Windows® desktop via a “thin client” software, permitting the client computer to serve as a terminal emulator. Only the user interface of the program is transmitted by the Terminal Services to the client. The client then returns keyboard and mouse clicks to be processed by the server. Each user logs on and sees only their individual session, which is managed transparently by the server operating system and is independent of any other client session. The client software is able to run on a number of client hardware devices, including computers and Windows-based terminals. Other devices, such as Macintosh computers or UNIX-based workstations, can use additional third-party software to connect to a server running Terminal Server.
Terminal Services or Remote Desktop Services is the underlying technology for several features and components of Microsoft Windows Server™ 2008/2012/2016/2019 family operating systems. Among these are Terminal Server and Remote Desktop for Administration.

Enable clients running Terminal Services to connect to a pool of servers running Windows Terminal Server to help balance network loads and eliminate failure points. And use Client Connection Manager to enable administrators or end users to set up predefined connections to one or several servers for single-application or full-desktop access.

Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) encryption. Allows administrators to encrypt the RDP data transmitted between the server running Windows Terminal Server and Terminal Services clients at three different levels, with up to 128-bit bidirectional RC4 encryption. FIPS encryption. Windows Server supports FIPS 140-1 encryption for organizations that require FIPS compliance. The FIPS encryption level uses 3DES/SHA1 encryption with 168-bit key. Limit log-on attempts and connection time settings. Help prevent unauthorized access and server attacks and control server access time with individual or group policies. User- or server-level security management features. Set security policies, including limiting redirects to local devices. Desktop lock-down capabilities. Set system policies and add options to disconnect, log off and access Windows Server 2003 Security to Windows-based client desktops and Start menus. Software restriction policy. Enable administrators to identify applications running on computers in a domain and control whether programs can execute. Access to USB devices other than USB printers, disk drives and smart card readers supported.
