What is Remote Desktop Services or Terminal Server?

Remote Desktop Services (RDS) or Terminal Server provides remote access to a Microsoft® Windows® desktop via a “thin client” software, permitting the client computer to serve as a terminal emulator. Only the user interface of the program is transmitted by the Terminal Services to the client. The client then returns keyboard and mouse clicks to be processed by the server. Each user logs on and sees only their individual session, which is managed transparently by the server operating system and is independent of any other client session. The client software is able to run on a number of client hardware devices, including computers and Windows-based terminals. Other devices, such as Macintosh computers or UNIX-based workstations, can use additional third-party software to connect to a server running Terminal Server.

Terminal Services or Remote Desktop Services is the underlying technology for several features and components of Microsoft Windows Server™ 2008/2012/2016/2019 family operating systems. Among these are Terminal Server and Remote Desktop for Administration.

Benefits of Remote Desktop Services

Work with the remote PC as with your local machine

DATABERRY Remote Desktop gives you a freedom to work remotely with any remote PC. When you connect to the remote desktop you can see its screen at the real time and all your mouse movements and key presses are transmitted to the remote PC in order to manage it by exactly the same way like you do it with your personal PC. Thus you don’t need more to physically visit each PC in order to work with it. All administration, configuration, support, troubleshooting, education and other kind of day-to-day tasks can be performed remotely.

Share access to remote PCs with other users

Standard Windows remote desktop connection tools allow having only one active session per PC. Using such connection you can’t establish connection to a remote PC if it’s used by logged-on user. DATABERRY Remote Desktop was designed to remove such limitation and can establish multiple active connections with remote PC. It is very helpful for presentations, troubleshooting and remote education, because the same desktop view is visible for multiple people at once, including a user logged-on on remote PCs. One participant can take a control on PC and manipulates with mouse and keyboard, while other watch the process in a view mode.

Save costs to adopt remote access software

Wide set of features and reasonable price makes DATABERRY Remote Desktop one of the bestsellers on the market. Depending on the selected edition and number of managed nodes (remote PCs), the price for node varies from less than $1 up to $7. Compare DATABERRY Remote Desktop with other remote access tools that have significantly less features set, but the higher price that varies from $25 up to $50 per node.

Use fast, flexible and secure solution

DATABERRY Remote Desktop has plenty of settings to make your work comfortable, including full-screen mode support. In this mode a remote screen in original resolution occupies all space on your screen to fully emulate a usage of the local desktop. Optimized and encrypted data transfer algorithms guarantee high speed of work with tens screen updates per second, so remote desktop is very responsive and you can even forget that you work remotely.

Communicate with remote users

Very often you need to communicate with the user sitting in front of the remote PC. For example, you provide a remote support and need to ask some questions or do something with remote PC and need to pay remote users’ attention to some aspects. Using Databerry Remote Desktop you can start chat session with remote user to exchange instant messages in real time in parallel with managing of remote PC.

Capture remote screens & record remote screencasts

Using Databerry Remote Desktop Solutions you can connect to one or multiple remote PCs to see remote users activity. Connection is silent, it means that remote users don’t have any notifications about the remote connection and can’t easily detect the fact that their desktops are monitored. It allows using DATABERRY Remote Desktop not only as remote management, but also as remote monitoring tool. Useful features that can help you with the monitoring of remote PCs equipped with applications. You can capture a remote desktop screen and save it as an image file or you can record remote activity as an AVI file.

Enhances productivity throughout the organization

Centralized application hosting. Effectively deliver applications across the enterprise to meet different needs, without straining network resources or exposing corporate data to unnecessary risks. Cost-effective application management. Reduce the costs and challenges of maintaining desktop machines with applications that are frequently updated, infrequently used, or hard to install – or that need to be accessed over low-bandwidth connections. Efficient application deployment. Use a local- or wide-area network to deliver high-performance computing resources to remote and mobile employees. Provide core Windows applications to users of legacy PCs or thin client devices.

Enables efficient, cost-effective application management

Remote Troubleshooting. Give help desk staff the ability to view or control Terminal Services sessions, such as those in branch offices, providing faster customer service. IT administrators can remotely manage any computer running Windows Server and leverage the tight integration of Terminal Services with other features such as active Directory services, Group Policy, Windows Management Instrumentation and the Microsoft Management Console. Automated and dynamic administrator tasks. Utilizes Systems Management Server to manage clusters of servers running Windows Terminal Server, enabling efficient, system-wide distribution and inventory of software. Support remote control port redirection and network or local printing* on client workstations (Terminals) from Wyse Neoware Systems, running Windows CE or Windows XP Embedded along with Windows Server. Communicate administrator-level alerts and system events via the Terminal Services Management Pack in Microsoft Operations Manager. Feature-rich terminal experience. Deliver high-performance computing capabilities to remote workstations with lower bandwidth. Enable clients running Terminal Services to connect to a pool of servers running Windows Terminal Server to help balance network loads and eliminate failure points. And use Client Connection Manager to enable administrators or end users to set up predefined connections to one or several servers for single-application or full-desktop access.

Improves application and data security

Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) encryption. Allows administrators to encrypt the RDP data transmitted between the server running Windows Terminal Server and Terminal Services clients at three different levels, with up to 128-bit bidirectional RC4 encryption. FIPS encryption. Windows Server supports FIPS 140-1 encryption for organizations that require FIPS compliance. The FIPS encryption level uses 3DES/SHA1 encryption with 168-bit key. Limit log-on attempts and connection time settings. Help prevent unauthorized access and server attacks and control server access time with individual or group policies. User- or server-level security management features. Set security policies, including limiting redirects to local devices. Desktop lock-down capabilities. Set system policies and add options to disconnect, log off and access Windows Server 2003 Security to Windows-based client desktops and Start menus. Software restriction policy. Enable administrators to identify applications running on computers in a domain and control whether programs can execute. Access to USB devices other than USB printers, disk drives and smart card readers supported.
