# Ever Wondered What Magento Is? Wonder No Longer.

“What is Magento?” only to get a blank stare, a noncommittal shrug, or a confused “I dunno”? Well, you are in luck. Because you finally found a resource that is going to answer that question for you. You no longer need to rely on someone else to give you a half-hearted, mostly false, answer. Now you can provide the correct answer, the first time it is asked. And you can be the life of the party when some poor soul asks “What is Magento?” Magento is a feature-rich ecommerce solution. It is a platform that has been built on open-source technology. It is a convenient business management software that provides online merchants with amazing amounts of control and flexibility over the look, functionality, and content of their online market. With the intuitive administration interface of Magento, online merchants have access to powerful marketing, SEO (Search Engine Optimization), and tools that allow for catalog management. The sites created through Magento design can truly be customized and uniquely tailored to each individual business’s needs. A Magento shopping cart for a comic book store online can be a completely different experience from a flower delivery service using Magento. A few technical aspects for you now. Magento was launched in 2008, on March 31. It was developed by a [company](http://50.57.208.244/about/) then known as Varien, but that now goes by Magento Inc. It was created with the help of programmers and a vast open source community. Despite that open source contribution, it is still solely owned by Magento Inc. The program was built using the Zend Framework, and uses the Entity-Attribute-Value (EAV) database model with which to store its data. Never again do you need to ask about Magento. Now you can be the one to impart all of the information to those unfortunate enough not to have found this helpful article. Magento is a super convenient program that makes online commerce not only possible, but fun and fully customizable.
